Imagine an internal LinkedIn network, by which you can rapidly search your colleague who has got the knowledge you need for yourself at that particular moment. Or imagine you can see exactly which colleagues are working on the same topics as you. Newsgator Social Networks is an addition to MOSS 2007 who makes it possible to do so. When it appears that a colleague in Australia is working on the same topic as you, you may learn this with this Social Networks solution. Just like in sites as LinkedIn it keeps track of the topics you are working on. Tagging also plays an important part. By means of Tags (labels: e.g. to a document on Dynamics AX you add AX in the tag field ) you may learn the subject of every document or item in SharePoint. These Tags are centrally maintained to prevent everyone from inventing another Tag for every document.
The basis of Social Networks is that all SharePoint users evaluate the information by tagging or star-rating, as opposed to other document management solutions, where the tags and ID’s are centrally determined. Compare to picture sites like Flickr and the video site Youtube, where users will appraise pictures and video themselves.
